Magna is a 6:15-minute video that combines 16mm footage with digital video captured on location at the Furnas Volcano (São Miguel Island, Azores), Death Valley, and a frozen ice flow in Vermont. The viewer sees a flickering planetary body before a black-and-white 16mm footage of rocky outcropping abruptly cuts in. Segments of the black-and-white film-captured footage, each slowly following the contours of boulders, are interspersed throughout the video. In between these moments of silent film, digital video captured in color on location at the Furnas Volcano (São Miguel Island, Azores), shows a scene of a volcanic steam vent and boiling volcanic mineral waters bubbling up through the surface of the earth. Ice flowing across the surface of a river as seen from above, and abstract views of water reflecting trees, textures of sand, and scratched film grain clear to reveal a rendering of Jupiter from NASA’s JunoCam. The title Magna refers to the feminine singular of the Latin meaning for "great," as in large in scale, powerful, and of significant importance.
